South End Press is established.

The worker-owned, non-profit collective is located at 116 Saint Botolph Street. It focuses on publishing books by radicals and leftists. Local authors include Noam Chomsky, Mel King, and Howard Zinn. The publisher moves to Cambridge in the 1990s, to Brooklyn in 2009, and closes in 2014.
